Healthcare at Hacienda del Álamo in Murcia

Healthcare in Murcia: a practical guide for Hacienda del Álamo owners

By Home Kare · 8 min read · Owner’s Guide

Healthcare in Murcia is one of the first things owners ask about, and one of the last they actually sort out. Spain’s public system is good, but access depends on your status, not on owning a home here.

This guide explains how healthcare in Murcia works for visitors and for residents. It also covers where you would be treated from Hacienda del Álamo and what to have ready.

How healthcare in Murcia works

Spain has a public health service, and each region runs its own. In the Region of Murcia it is the Servicio Murciano de Salud. Care is organised by health areas, each with local health centres and a reference hospital.

Owning a property does not give you access on its own. What matters is whether you are visiting or living here, and how you are covered.

Healthcare in Murcia as a visitor

If your stays fit within the 90/180 day rule, you are a visitor in health terms too. Our guide to the 90/180 day rule explains how those days are counted, and Winter in Murcia covers the longer stays many owners plan.

UK visitors with a GHIC or a valid EHIC can use state healthcare that becomes medically necessary during their stay. They are treated on the same terms as residents. That is the purpose of the card, but it is not a full health plan.

The UK government is clear that the card does not replace travel insurance. It does not cover private treatment or repatriation, so GOV.UK advises buying travel insurance as well.

Before you fly: check that your GHIC or EHIC is in date and that your travel insurance covers any pre-existing conditions. Both are easy to forget when you are just “going to the house”.

Healthcare in Murcia as a resident

Once you live in Spain, the rules change. Anyone staying more than three months must register as resident or hold the right visa. To do either, you need proof of healthcare cover. The UK government’s guide to healthcare in Spain sets out the routes, summarised below.

Your situationHow you are usually covered
Working or self-employed in SpainSocial security contributions, like any Spanish worker
Receiving a UK State PensionAn S1 form, registered with the INSS
Not working, less than a year on the padrónPrivate health insurance
Not working, at least a year on the padrónThe Convenio Especial, a public scheme with a monthly fee

Once covered, you register at your local health centre and receive your health card. From then on, basic state care is free at the point of use, although some items carry co-payments.

If you are planning the move, start with our guide to Spanish visas for Hacienda del Álamo owners. Most visas ask for health cover from day one. You will also need your NIE, which we explain in what the NIE is and isn’t.

Where you would be treated from Hacienda del Álamo

The resort is in the municipality of Fuente Álamo, which belongs to Health Area 2 of the Region of Murcia. According to the Murcia health service, its reference hospitals are Santa Lucía and Santa María del Rosell, both in Cartagena.

Health centre

Everyday appointments, prescriptions and referrals go through the health centre in Fuente Álamo, a short drive from the resort. Your GP there is also your route to specialists.

Hospital

Cartagena is roughly half an hour away by car. Murcia city is at a similar distance, and both cities also have private hospitals.

Emergencies

In an emergency, call 112. It is the single EU emergency number and works from any phone, including a foreign mobile.

Public or private healthcare in Murcia

Many owners combine both. They rely on the public system for emergencies and serious treatment, and on private insurance for quicker specialist appointments.

Premiums vary a lot with age and the level of cover, so compare several quotes. Whatever you choose, check three things in the policy:

  • Waiting periods before some treatments are covered.
  • Exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
  • Visa requirements, if you need the policy for residency. Some consulates ask for full cover with no co-payments.

A short checklist

  • Keep your GHIC or EHIC and travel insurance details at the house and on your phone.
  • Note the addresses of the health centre and the hospital before you need them.
  • Bring enough of any regular medication, with a copy of the prescription.
  • Save 112 in your phone.
  • If you plan to stay longer, check which route into healthcare in Murcia fits your situation before applying for residency.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use public healthcare in Murcia just because I own a property?
No. Access depends on residency and cover, not ownership. Visitors use the GHIC or EHIC for necessary care, while residents register through one of the routes above.

Is healthcare in Murcia free for UK pensioners?
If you live here and receive a UK State Pension, you may qualify through an S1 form. You register it with the INSS, and it also covers your dependants.

Which hospital serves Hacienda del Álamo?
The resort is in Health Area 2, whose reference hospital complex is in Cartagena.

Do I still need travel insurance with a GHIC?
Yes. The card covers necessary state care, but not private treatment or repatriation.

Can I get healthcare in Murcia in English?
Private clinics often offer it. In the public system it varies, so a Spanish-speaking friend or a translation app is worth having ready.
