Winter in Murcia

By Home Kare · 8 min read · Buyer’s Guide

Winter in Murcia is the reason many of our owners bought here in the first place. While northern Europe turns grey, the Costa Cálida keeps its blue skies, its golf courses and its long lunches outside. Yet the brochures leave out a few things, starting with how cold a Spanish house can feel at night.

This guide covers what winter in Murcia is really like. We look at the weather, resort life, heating and how long you can stay.

What winter in Murcia is really like

The Region of Murcia is one of the driest and sunniest corners of mainland Spain. However, “sunny” and “warm” are not the same thing, and the difference matters when you plan a stay.

Daytime: T-shirt weather at lunch

From December to February, afternoons usually reach around 16 to 19°C. On a calm, sunny day it feels warmer, so lunch on a terrace is perfectly normal. These are approximate averages, and the Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, publishes the official climate records for each station.

Nights: colder than you expect

As soon as the sun goes down, the temperature drops fast. Inland areas such as Fuente Álamo often fall to around 3 to 7°C at night, and the odd frost is not unheard of. In other words, you will want a jumper by 6pm.

Rain and wind

Rain is rare, but when it comes it tends to arrive in short, heavy bursts rather than long drizzly weeks. Wind is the bigger nuisance, especially on the odd blustery day. Overall, though, most winter weeks are dry and bright.

Life at Hacienda del Álamo in winter

For golfers, winter in Murcia is the high season. The ground is firm, the air is cool and a round in January is far more pleasant than one in August. Tee times fill up accordingly, so it pays to book ahead.

The resort itself is quieter than in summer. Families have gone home, the pools are calmer and the atmosphere is closer to a village than a holiday complex. Many owners say that is exactly what they come for. Meanwhile, Murcia city, Cartagena and the coast stay open all year, so there is plenty to do beyond the fairways.

Heating: the part nobody warns you about

Spanish homes are built to stay cool. Tiled floors, thick walls and shade are wonderful in July. In winter, however, they hold the cold, and the inside of a house can feel chillier than the terrace at noon.

Air conditioning works both ways

Most properties at the resort have air-conditioning units that also heat, known locally as a “bomba de calor”. They warm a room quickly and cost far less to run than electric radiators. Therefore, check that yours work before your first winter stay, not on the first cold night.

Small changes that make a big difference

For winter in Murcia, rugs on tiled floors, thermal curtains and a portable heater for the bedroom make a real difference. Some owners also add an electric fireplace in the living room. As a rough guide, heating a two-bedroom home adds tens of euros a month to the electricity bill. The exact figure depends on use and tariff.

How long can you stay?

For many British owners, the real limit on winter in Murcia is not the weather but the calendar. Since Brexit, UK citizens can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area without a visa. That means a full winter from November to March does not fit without planning.

We explain how the count works, and what happens if you get it wrong, in our guide to the 90/180 day rule. The UK government also keeps its Spain travel advice up to date with the current entry requirements.

EU citizens are not affected by this rule. Even so, stays of more than three months require registering as a resident.

Renting for the winter or buying?

Many people try winter in Murcia as renters before they buy. A month or two in a holiday let is the best test. You get the nights, the heating and the low-season pace. You can browse our holiday rentals at Hacienda del Álamo for winter availability.

For owners, winter also brings an opportunity. Winter visitors look for longer stays, so a property that sits empty from November to March can often earn its keep. On the other hand, it needs to be warm and well equipped, because winter guests notice cold floors straight away.

If you have already decided, take a look at the properties for sale at the resort.

Frequently asked questions

Is winter in Murcia warm enough for the pool?
Not really. Outdoor pools are cold from December to March unless they are heated. Most people swim in spring and autumn and play golf in winter.

Which is the best winter month in Murcia?
February often combines mild days with the first almond blossom. December and January are the coolest months, especially at night.

Do I need to heat my home if I am away all winter?
You do not need to heat it, but ventilate it and run a dehumidifier if you can. A closed house can get damp over several months.

Is winter in Murcia a good time to view properties?
Yes. It is quieter, agents have more time, and you see each home at its coldest, which is the honest test.
